LSU museum opens new exhibit

BATON ROUGE – The LSU Museum of Art, located in the Shaw Center for the Arts in downtown Baton Rouge, will open a new exhibit, “Cascade of Color: Gabriel Dawe,” a floor-to-ceiling display of intertwined sewing threads, on Saturday, April 28. The exhibit will be on display through April 7, 2013, in the Gill Hamilton Gallery.

Dawe’s work creates environments that deal with the notions of social constructions and their reaction to evolutionary theory and the self-organizing force of nature. The intricate artwork differs with every changing perspective.

During the museum’s opening hours until the exhibit’s opening day on Saturday, Dawe will be working on his installation, specifically designed for the narrow space of the gallery.

Dawe was born in Mexico City, where he was surrounded by the color of Mexican culture. He worked as a graphic designer until 2000, when he moved to Montreal, Canada, with a desire to explore. He started expanding his creative freedom by working with textiles.

Dawe went on to pursue graduate school at the University of Texas at Dallas.
