Black History Profile: Agnes Andrews | Arts & Culture
Title (Max 100 Characters)
Agnes Andrews is a very busy woman.
She runs a successful insurance agency in Baton Rouge--employing six people.
"We started with nothing and we've built quite a nice book of business as they refer to in the industry," Andrews says.
She is also a wife, mother, and grandmother.
"I strive to put God first, family second and my business third," she says.
But she still finds time to give back to the community.
"I just know that in order for a person to be successful education is a must," she says. "And we are all responsible for young people being educated."
For the past nine years, she's helped sponsor the annual Southern University College of Business gala. The event has raised more than 400 thousand dollars for scholarships. Her husband Donald is the dean of the college.
Her colleague Roman Gage says she's always giving. "'A lot of people give money and you never see them. She gives her time."
The Southern grad has been in business for nearly 30 years.
Andrews says she doesn't plan to retire anytime soon. Her goal is to train even more young people to learn the business so they can own their own agency.
Now the New roads native is busy recruiting the next generation including her daughter Nayo.
