LSU helps develop high-tech map for BRAVE program

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB)- The BRAVE
project is getting a new tool in its fight against crime in the form of a
high-tech map.

The folks
at LSU are helping develop it.

It's a
Google Maps or Facebook of sorts to help fight crime.

About half
a dozen experts are partnering up with area law enforcement, spending the next
several months compiling an enormous amount of crime data and stats.

They'll
create a crime map of the Capital City.

Law enforcement
will be able to see trends in crime: where troubled areas are, what types of
crime and who is committing crime.

That way, officers
can better apply their efforts.

Researchers
are following the examples of other cities with similar programs, where they
saw a 30 percent reduction in crime.

Car thieves hit neighborhood in City of Central

CENTRAL, LA (WAFB)- Neighbors in one City of Central subdivision are looking for a couple of car criminals. The search has lead them to take steps to better secure their property. The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office says that starts with some simple advice.

Comite Hills is a lot like other neighborhoods: big, beautiful homes, quiet, safe and secure enough that some car doors end up left unlocked.

Phyllis Sullivan says she never expected to need a security system at her home, but Tuesday a sign reading 'All-Activities Video Recorded' went up in her front yard; so did three cameras.

"The deputy came out and he said that other people in the neighborhood had been calling. There was a rash of burglaries," said Sullivan.

She says Friday, July 13, she woke to find someone had been in her daughter's friends car that was parked in her driveway.

"She went to go get in her vehicle, the doors were opened. Everything in there ransacked," she said.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office says a total of six cars were burglarized in a two night period, from July 12 and July 13.
