Interesting find on Dyer Road Tuesday morning

Interesting find on Dyer Road Tuesday morning

There is no need to go to the swamps of Pierre Part to see an alligator. If you were driving on Dyer Road at the Comite River bridge in Central Tuesday morning, and you thought you may have seen an alligator, your eyes were not playing tricks on you.

This gator, estimated to be between four and five feet long, was not alive, but the person who took the picture said there were no signs of trauma, and had no idea on how the reptile died.

The viewer commented on how this will make her think twice about going swimming in the Comite River.

The Christmas tree recycling program will offer curbside collection for East Baton Rouge residents, except in Baker and Zachary. Several drop-off locations will also be available.

Recycling Director Susan Hamilton said that Allied Waste will collect Christmas trees placed on the curb between Jan. 9 and Jan. 22.

“The trees will be collected in rear loaders or brush trucks on the resident’s trash collection day in a separate pass, stated Hamilton.  “The Christmas trees are then delivered to Natural Resources Recovery, Inc., the city-parish woody-waste recycling contractor, where they are processed into compost or mulch,” Hamilton continued.

Christmas trees should be placed at the curb separate from other unbundled trash and woody waste.

Firefighters offer holiday safety tips

Firefighters offer holiday safety tips

The holidays are here and St. George Fire Protection District officials want you to have a safe and enjoyable time. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind.

There are more house fires on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year. Most of those fires stem from inattentive cooking. Never leave cooking food unattended.

Keep clutter and loose clothing away from the stove.

Turn pot handles in and away from children’s reach.

Make sure those cooking appliances you may only use once or twice a year are in good working order.

Don’t overload electric outlets. Unplug appliances when not in use.

If a fire flares up in the oven, don’t open the oven door. Turn the oven off and call 9-1-1.

Don’t throw water on a grease fire. Instead, cover the burning pan with a lid.

Use pot holders to prevent burns.

If you fry turkeys, do it away from the house.

Never put a partially frozen turkey into hot oil.

Observe the “three foot rule” when decorating. Never place combustible items within three feet of ANY open flame or source of heat.

Make sure your Christmas Tree is fresh.
