Southern's Former Band Director will be inducted into Hall of Fame | Events
Isaac Greggs, the legendary former band director of the Southern University Human Jukebox band, will be inducted into the Louisiana Black History Hall of Fame on Saturday, June 22.
The 'Torches of Life Award' Induction Ceremony will take place at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church Family Life Center, 9700 Scenic Highway in Baton Rouge, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets are $25. Greggs served as band director for more than 30 years.
Proceeds will be used to help fund the Black History Hall of Fame exhibition room at the Lincoln Theater, a historical landmark in South Baton Rouge which was purchased by the Black History Hall of Fame. The Lincoln Theater which opened in 1949 showcased African American performers and African American films as well as served as a business and community center before it closed in 2009.
Organizers are trying to raise $500,000 to match the $500,000 that’s already been donated.
“We wanted to bring the Lincoln Theater back to the jewel that it was and find a permanent home for the Louisiana Black History Hall of Fame museum,” says Founder Brenda Perry Dunn.
