911 calls released in Baker plane crash

BAKER, LA (WAFB)- Dispatch: "9-1-1 Where's your emergency?"
Caller:  "An airplane just hit a house. I live on 5408 Rue Nicole."

A frantic 9-1-1 call after a plane crashes into a home in Baker, La. This caller was just a street over when the plane hit.

Dispatch: "Ma'am."
Caller: "Yes Ma'am I can't KEEP calm right now, my life feels like it is in danger."
Dispatch: "We are going to send help on the way. About how long ago did it crash?"
Caller: "It just did right when I called you."

The Beechcraft King Air plane was in route to McComb, MS, But it ran into some trouble just after takeoff. It soon fell out the sky, hitting three homes before bursting into flames, killing the pilot, 71-year old John Fowler of Brookhaven, MS.

Caller "Yes Ma'am, my neighbor told me an airplane went down. Something's going down. My neighbor said an airplane is crashing into a field."

Here is another caller who ran outside after she heard a loud boom. She tells the dispatcher the location and it turns for the worst.

NTSB releases preliminary report on Baker plane crash

BAKER, LA (WAFB)- A report released Monday evening by the National Transportation
Safety Board says that a flight plan had not been filed before an airplane
crashed into a Baker neighborhood.

The report says the BeechCraft KingAir reached an altitude of 1,200
feet and began a slow descent, disappeared from radar and hit the roof of a
home and a tree before hitting two more houses and bursting into flames.

The pilot of the plane, John Fowler of Brookhaven MS, died in the
crash.

The last radio transmission from Fowler was that he was going to
crash.

The craft's cockpit voice recorder was recovered and shipped to
Washington, DC for examination.

The crash happened about three miles northeast of the Baton Rouge
Metro Airport.  Fowler, 71, was flying to
McComb, Mississippi.

Fire starts when someone turns on wrong burner

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB)- An error in
the kitchen is believed to be the cause of a fire at a home Monday morning.

It started
at a home on Nashville Avenue in Baton Rouge just before 9 a.m.

Fire
investigators said the fire sparked when someone in the home turned on the
wrong burner on the stove.

There was no
word on any injuries.

Pot left unattended sparks fire that damages multiple units of apartment complex

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB)- Investigators
said a fire that started because a pot was left unattended damaged seven units
of an apartment complex Sunday evening.

It happened
at the Evangeline Place apartments in the 4700 block Annette Street in Baton
Rouge just before 7 p.m.

The Baton
Rouge Fire Department reported the fire began in apartment No. 6, with the
flames basically gutting the kitchen and living room. The blaze also caused
heavy smoke and heat damage throughout the rest of the unit.

The kitchen
wall in apartment No. 7 was damaged by the fire and other units had mild to
moderate smoke damage.

American
Red Cross volunteers said they are helping 14 people, including two children.
They are providing temporary housing, food, clothing and other needs.

Man arrested for shooting brother during argument

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB)- A Baton Rouge man is now in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison after police say he shot and killed his younger brother around 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

Detectives say 51-year-old Michael Hebert was arguing with his brother, 45-year-old Wayne Hebert of Austin, TX, Saturday morning.

Officers arrived at the scene in the 9800 block of Chateu Drive, where Michael lives with his parents, to find Wayne in the driveway with multiple gunshot wounds to his back.

According to police reports, Michael told officers that he and his brother were arguing and he thought Wayne was going to physically attack him. Michael left the driveway, got a gun, came back and shot his brother.

Michael Hebert was taken into custody and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of second degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.

Gov. Jindal signs 106 House bills into law

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB)- Governor Bobby Jindal has signed the following bills from the House of Representatives into law:

HB 9 by Rep. P. Williams: Increases the jurisdictional amount in dispute in the City Court of Shreveport.

HB 10 by Rep. Pearson: Adds certain hallucinogenic substances to the list of Schedule I controlled dangerous substances.

HB 15 by Rep. Mack: Adds certain compounds to the Schedule I classification of controlled dangerous substances.

HB 16 by Rep. Dixon: Provides transfer of certain state property in Rapides Parish to the city of Pineville.

HB 18 by Rep. Danahay: Relates to meetings of the Sulphur Industrial Development District.

HB 36 by Rep. Danahay: Relates to the Sheriffs' Pension and Relief Fund.

HB 37 by Rep. N. Landry: Requires promulgation of actuarial assumptions by the board of trustees for the Registrars of Voters Employees' Retirement System

HB 38 by Rep. Greene: Relates to employee contributions in the Registrars of Voters Employees' Retirement System.

Homeowners return to assess damage caused by plane crash

BAKER, LA (WAFB)- Investigators
are allowing residents displaced by a plane crash to return home.

Federal
crews wrapped up their collection of wreckage debris from the crash site in
Baker Monday, allowing homeowners back inside. Now, those homeowners affected
by the crash can begin assessing the damage.

It could take
investigators weeks to figure out what caused the plane to crash, killing the
pilot minutes after takeoff. The coroner reported John Fowler, 71, of
Brookhaven, MS, died from blunt force, thermal and inhalation injuries. His
death was ruled an accident. Fowler was the only person on the plane when it
crashed.

The
Beechcraft King Air went down Friday afternoon along Rue Jennifer, just minutes
after takeoff from the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport. Officials said when
the plane went down it clipped one house and a tree. The plane then spun
around and hit two more homes. The plane burst into flames and set
the two homes on fire.

The crash
was almost four miles from the airport.
