Jindal supports proposed legislation to restrict sex offenders from public libraries

Jindal supports proposed legislation to restrict sex offenders from public libraries

Governor Bobby Jindal recently announced his support for SB 162 by Sen. Dale Erdey, which restricts access to public libraries for certain sex offenders. The legislation will be included in the Governor’s 2012 legislative package.

“This session we’re pushing for a number of new laws that continue to crack down on sex predators so they can’t harm children in our state," Jindal says. "Like schools and playgrounds, libraries should be a place where children can feel protected. This legislation is another important step we can take to make our communities safe from sex predators.”

“We must do everything in our power to protect our children," says Erdey.  "Sex offenders don't belong in our schools or playgrounds, and with this legislation we’ll add public libraries to that list. Our libraries are a place of learning and growth, and I'm proud the Governor supports keeping these institutions safe from sex offenders.”

Currently, convicted sex offenders who committed a sex offense against a victim under the age of 13, are prohibited from residing or physically being on or within 1,000 feet of school property or a park.

Mike “Snapper” Knaps Chief of Police City of Baker wrote:

I am humbly honored to be your Chief of Police. For 32 years I have been a commissioned Baker Police Officer serving all the citizens of Baker. I have lived in Baker 51 years. I have been involved with the youth in Baker for over 35 years teaching, umpiring, refereeing and coaching. I have held every rank and every position in the Baker Police Department. I was recognized as Baker Officer of the Year 5 times.

In 2008 Central City News did a state and national crime survey and Baker was listed as the 2nd safest city in Louisiana and 4th safest in the U.S.A. with a 3.8 rating. The latest Universal Crime Report for Louisiana issued was last year and Baker improved to a 3.2 rating with Baton Rouge at a 12.6 rating (lower scores mean less major crime.)  We are still one of the safest cities in the country! As long as you allow me to be your Chief I will continue to be a firm but fair leader Keeping Baker Safer.
