Is Coach Stump Mitchell leaving? | Sports & Recreation

A source who is well-entrenched in the Southern University football program says quote "there is a possibility" Head Coach Stump Mitchell will leave the school and join the St. Louis Rams as an assistant coach. For what it's worth...no one seems to be shooting down that possibility at Southern. While Mitchell downplayed that talk all week...he did not return phone calls or text messages Sunday, Feb. 19. Sports Information Spokesperson Chris Jones says he expects to see Mitchell at the start of Spring ball on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Meanwhile Acting Interim Athletic Director Sandy Pugh....who was in Alabama coaching the women's basketball team...did answer her phone Sunday, but couldn't provide much information about Mitchell's future either, simply saying "we should know more Monday." Mitchell had a long stint as an assistant coach in the NFL --over a decade-- before arriving at Southern two years ago.
