The Baton Rouge Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and the Baton Rouge Sigma Foundation began their centennial celebration with a public program - Delta’s Commitment to Service on Friday, February 1 at the organization’s Life Development Center. Community leaders representing the Sorority’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrust and two commissions were honored with the 2013 Commemorative Service Award. The honorees were: Economic Development – Attorney John Pierre, Educational Development – Former Congressman Cleo Fields, Political Awareness – Representative Patricia Haynes Smith, Physical and Mental Health – Edie Staples and Shirley Lolis, International Awareness – Dr. Harriett Pitcher, Social Action – Carolyn Gee and McHenry Jackson, and Arts and Letters – Dr. Everrette Parker and the Baton Rouge Weekly Press represented by Rev. Ivory Payne.
The Centennial Celebration continued on Saturday, February 2 as the Baton Rouge Sigma Alumnae Chapter held its Founders Day Luncheon at Boudreaux’s. Paying tribute to the twenty-two founders of the Sorority, members serving for 25, 40 and 50 years of service were also honored. Chapter President Debra Lawson Ephrom and first vice president Chi Joseph Franklin presented the honorees with plaques and gifts.
The twenty five year honorees were: Yvonne McGhee-Thornton, Susan B. Radcliff, Lisa Smith-Vosper, Regina A. Valentine, Kymberly Vincent-McCoy, Jean’quel White-Henry, and Kimberly Whitley Moye.
Forty-year honorees were: Claudia J. Fisher, Mildred W. “Winnie” Penson, Blanche E. Page Smith, and Yvonne Jean Simmons Whitley.
Fifty-year honorees were: Bernice Stewart Carter, Cheryl McKay Dixon and Brenda P. Moncriffe.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on January 13, 1913 at Howard University in Washington, DC. Today, Delta has more than 800 chapters and 200,000 members worldwide. Baton Rouge Sigma Alumnae Chapter has served the Baton Rouge community since 1956.
