Isaac Greggs, the legendary former band director of the Southern University Human Jukebox band, was inducted into the Louisiana Black History Hall of Fame on Saturday, June 22.
The 'Torches of Life Award' Induction Ceremony took place at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church Family Life Center, 9700 Scenic Highway in Baton Rouge, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Greggs served as band director for nearly 40 years.
Special presentations were made by his family, his former band members, and the former Dancing Dolls. Grambling State University's Band Director Larry Panell also gave a moving tribute.
Proceeds from the event will be used to fund the Black History Hall of Fame exhibition room at the Lincoln Theater, a historical landmark in South Baton Rouge which was purchased by the Black History Hall of Fame. The Lincoln Theater which opened in 1949 showcased African American performers and African American films as well as served as a business and community center before it closed in 2009.
